REVEAL is a misdirection joke that is not only in stand-up but in TV, Film, Literature, and you can execute the joke Visually as well.
For the punchline to reveal truth, look for any WHO, WHAT, WHERE in your life that have strong traits of ANOTHER Who, What, Where. Here’s some examples:
WHO - Your Parent that has the same traits as a child
WHAT - Party Drugs that have the same traits as food
WHERE - A Strip Club that has the same traits as a sporting event
Once you know which of the 3W’s you want to hide and reveal, in the set up you need to use:
AMBIGUOUS WORDS + UNAMBIGUOUS CONTEXT
That’s how you create a plot twist that avoids contradiction.
WHERE example - Live events are the best. I got front row seats last night, spent a lot of money but it was worth it, you can feel their sweat hitting you in the face…There’s nothing like the strip club.

![@ashtonwomack does a brilliant job showing how comedy can help process grief without contradicting it. Both can exist in the same joke.
Happy Father’s Day to all those missing their Father’s today 🙏🏾
Here are the list of techniques:
1. List With A Twist
2. New Context = New Meaning (Misinterpretation)
3. Double Reversal
4. Remix
If you want to find comedic relief within grief, the 2nd joke technique is a great place to start:
1. Context A = find a detail that honors the grief in the original context
2. Context Z = ask yourself how that detail would be misinterpreted to the opposite in a new context

![@jayjurden shows that a knowledge of multiple joke structures allows you to get a lot of different laughs out of a single idea in stand-up comedy.
Instead of just having one idea, one joke, one punchline, and moving on…
You can get so much more creative with your material, by adding in several comedic techniques in one idea.
For specific exercises go to my page and check out the two carousels:
1️⃣ How to Write a Double Reversal Joke
2️⃣ 3 Secrets to a Great Analogy Joke
This is also an example of the 3 Cs - CARE, CREDIBILITY, CREATIVITY and asking yourself: what is the target of your joke, and who are you okay with dividing?
The target of the joke is a homophobic person, and if homophobic people get offended by the joke, that’s okay because that’s the decision you intentionally made as a comic.
The Three Cs are not about being safe and avoiding offending everyone.
It’s about being very clear about:
1️⃣ the intention of your joke
2️⃣ who you want to invite in on the laugh
3️⃣ and who you want to call out
If your intention matches the impact, that’s all you can ask for as a comic.

![Who are you okay with dividing?
The 3Cs framework is all about matching your intent with your impact.
If you intended to make an audience you care about laugh and instead they got offended, it's because you were missing at least one of the 3Cs.
I do not understand why comedians at the highest level are defending the lowest quality of comedy.
Comedy is a courageous act, and it's pathetic when it's being used to defend cowards.
If you want to do high-quality comedy and take big risks and push the limits while still connecting positively with your audience, make sure you establish:
- Care
- Credibility
- Creativity
By pointing out that these "jokes" were racist, I've already had several white supremacists, like the one screenshot In my video, show who they really are in my comments.
Hateful jokes give hateful people permission to be more hateful. There's a direct link.
