Racist comedians love saying “It’s Just A Joke” when there’s an overwhelming amount of evidence pointing to…well, just good ol fashion racism.

If you want people to laugh and enjoy roast jokes you need to:

1. Have the creativity of the joke surpass the cruelty of the joke.

2. Roast the person’s choices and circumstances, instead of dehumanizing an entire race.

3. Live your life in a way where it’s obvious the cruel joke you’re telling is not who you actually are.

4. Jokes that subvert the harms of the dominant culture will get more laughs than jokes that support the harms of the dominant culture.

5. When roasts are presented for mass appeal, dehumanizing the entire identity of an individual is dehumanizing the entire identity of the collective. So back to Number 2…roasting the choices and circumstances keep the roast on an individual basis which gives the audience more room to laugh since the collective doesn’t feel dehumanized in the process.

READ 👉🏾 Early in my career I would watch other comedians before my set and think: they look like comedians. Relaxed. Confident. Like they knew something I didn’t.

I was over there replaying my set in my head, second-guessing every word, convinced the whole room already knew I was wack AF.

What I didn’t know then is that almost every comic in that room felt the exact same way at some point.

Some of them still do.

The difference between the comedians who grow and the ones who stop isn’t talent. It’s just showing up enough times that the self-doubt becomes irrelevant…because the comedy comes first.

And somewhere in all those nights of showing up, I realized I’d been waiting for something that was never coming.

I thought I needed to earn the right to call myself a comedian.

Like there was some threshold I had to cross — enough laughs, enough sets, enough years…

There isn’t.

You became a comedian the first time you got on a stage and said something real to a room full of strangers.

That was the moment.

Everything after that is just you getting better at something you already are.

If you’re still in rooms, still writing, still getting up despite the doubt — stop waiting for someone to confirm it.

You already showed up.

You’re a comedian. Now do the damn thing.🎤

MIC IT UP retires in MAY after 2 Years!

I’m preparing to be a dad and life is lifing so I’ll have to take a step back from some of my other responsibilities to take care of MY MAIN gig - being a new dad and supporting my wife @anise.seed through the process.

Come through and show love and let’s celebrate the last 3 shows.

Comedy is simple math - but what you choose to do with that math can become ART.

For years when people said "jokes have to surprise," that was always so vague to me.

💡But then I started seeing jokes as shapes.

🔐 Based on those shapes, I realized there are only 2 fundamental ways you can surprise the audience with the joke:

1️⃣ Detour: 1+2 = THREE

2️⃣ Misdirection: 1+2 = C

🔑 A joke is either surprising the audience by going in the same direction as the setup but getting there in a unique, surprising way (Detour 1+2 = THREE)

🔑 Or a joke is “tricking” the audience by going in the opposite direction of what they expected in the set up (Misdirection 1+2 = C)

‼️There still needs to be logic with misdirection (1+2 = C). In the set up of the formula we’re “tricked” by assuming the answer will be a number, but it switches to a letter. Logically 3 and C are both the Third in a sequence.

***The only exception is a type of joke that is rarely used (around 1%) 1+2 = 7. This is a non-sequitur. Surprise has no logic. Completely random.

Detour and Misdirection are what I call PRIMARY JOKE STRUCTURES - they’re the foundation of every joke.

But there are 30+ types of Detour and 20+ types of Misdirection. Those are what I call SECONDARY JOKE STRUCTURES.

I’ll be posting more about the Secondary joke structures (The last reel I made is an example of Primary: Misdirection / Secondary: False Stop vs Alternate Ending)

a new idea

a new obsession

a new weird thought

And the excitement of discovering what will work and won’t work In front of an audience in real time is so exciting.
